Three things determine whether we recommend repair or replacement: the width and depth of cracking, whether the slab has shifted vertically between panels, and the condition of the base underneath. Hairline surface cracks with no height difference are usually cosmetic and can be sealed. Wide cracks, visibly sunken panels, or a slab that rocks under weight point to a failed base — and patching over a failed base is a short-term fix at best.
When a slab has settled but is still structurally sound, mudjacking lifts it back to level by pumping a cement-based slurry underneath through small drilled holes. It's a same-day process for most driveway and sidewalk sections, and costs a fraction of full replacement. It won't fix wide structural cracks, but for settlement caused by soil erosion or poor original compaction — common in Cape County's clay soils — it's often the right call.
